When we were able to bring Audrey and Antonino home, they only weighed 4.9 and 5 pounds respectively. They were born 3 weeks early so they had to stay in the hospital until they reached term. My mom bought them cute going home outfits which they didn't get to wear because they were too big for preemies. They were also gifted plenty of cute clothes by family and friends. While most of them were sized newborn or 0-3 months, the twins still looked like they were in togas when they wore them. I was so scared that my tiny babies won't be able to grow.
On their 8th week, I was so happy that they finally fit perfectly in their newborn onesies but at the back of my mind I was still a bit worried about their growth. Will they always be playing catchup? So imagine my surprise when I was changing their clothes a month later and saw garter marks on their waists! Their pajamas which were so loose in the earlier days were already too tight! I suddenly had to clean out their closet. While sorting their clothes, I found out that they not only outgrew their pajamas and newborn onesies, but also some of their onesies labeled 3-6 months! They also changed diaper sizes from newborn to small. Good thing we didn't hoard those newborn diapers!
When Audrey and Antonino were born premature, I was so scared about their physical development. But now I am able to witness that they don't always stay tiny. I'm so proud of how they've more than doubled their birth weights. They can even roll from belly to back and are starting to babble and imitate sounds. I sometimes even catch myself saying things like back when they were smaller when I talk about them. So I guess what I'm trying to say here is think big, preemie mom! You'll be amazed at how your baby can grow and this is just the beginning!
All of my children were born full term but I also know that feeling. Babies grow really quickly. I kept some of their baby clothes to remind me and them of how little they were once upon a time. That is also why I do my best to spend as much quality time with them as I can. I want them to remember that they were showered with love and attention by their mom. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea about keeping some of their tiny clothes. I'm sure they'll be surprised at how little they were. As they always say with parenting, the days are long but the years are short.
DeleteThese are so cute!! They remind me of my brothers socks which were also hand made for him since was also a premature baby. He has born at 6 months and weighed 900 grams. Amazing what medicine can do, hes much much taller than me now hehe.
ReplyDeleteHi Johna! Thank you for sharing! Stories like these gave me great hope during the twins' stay at the hospital. I hope the twins grow the same way as your brother!
